Where a real 4x4 is required
Son-Kul, Kel-Suu, Arabel, Lenin Peak, the yurt camps. The approach to Son-Kul is the Kalmak-Ashuu pass at 3,446 metres: gravel and steep switchbacks without barriers, or the “33 Turns” pass at 3,133 metres. A crossover does not belong there — it takes a body-on-frame SUV and mountain driving experience.
Note: public roads only. Water crossings, beaches and off-road driving are not covered by insurance.

- How much does car rental in Bishkek cost?
- From $45 a day for a Kia Morning to $180 for a Jeep. Sedans and standard class — $45–95, crossovers — $75–95, minivans — $90–110, real 4x4 SUVs — $130–180. The longer the term, the lower the daily rate: it drops on day 4 and again on day 8.
- What are the driver requirements?
- From 23 years old and at least 3 years of driving experience — for every class of car, no exceptions. It is the insurer’s condition. If your licence is newer, a car with a driver is the way.
- Is a deposit required and when is it returned?
- A deposit is mandatory: $300 for a sedan or FWD crossover, $500 for an SUV or minivan, up to $1,000 for premium models. It is returned after the inspection; for a night return — the next working day. $100 is held for up to 30 days to check traffic fines.
- Is there a mileage limit?
- It includes 300 km per day, and the limit accumulates over the whole rental: five days means 1,500 km in total. Excess mileage is 30 som per kilometre.
